Breast Surgery Q & A

What is breast surgery?

Breast surgery includes any procedure that modifies your breasts. Though cosmetic surgery is a type of breast surgery, the team at Timothy W. Teslow, M.D., P.C. performs breast surgery to treat medical conditions such as breast cancer and benign breast lumps.

What types of breast surgery are performed?

At Timothy W. Teslow, M.D., P.C., the team performs many types of breast surgery.

A lumpectomy is a breast-preserving procedure. During the surgery, the surgeon removes only the abnormal tissue so your breast retains its normal shape.

The team may perform a lumpectomy to remove a benign breast tumor or an early-stage breast cancer tumor.

During a mastectomy, your surgeon removes the entire breast to treat or prevent breast cancer.

The team performs many types of mastectomies, including skin-sparing and nipple/areola-sparing mastectomies. The type of mastectomy best suited for you depends on the size, location, and behavior or your tumor, and whether you intend to undergo breast reconstruction surgery or not.

If you’re having breast reconstruction, the team works closely with your plastic surgeon so that your reconstruction procedure immediately follows your mastectomy. You meet with your plastic surgeon prior to your mastectomy to discuss your breast reconstruction options.

Sentinel node sampling

The team at Timothy W. Teslow, M.D., P.C. also performs sentinel node sampling, removing the lymph nodes under the arms where the cancer is most likely to spread first and checking them for cancer cells.

They perform sentinel node sampling to potentially eliminate the need for complete removal of all the lymph nodes under your arm, known as complete axillary dissection.

What happens during a breast surgery consultation?

The team at Timothy W. Teslow, M.D., P.C. performs a comprehensive evaluation when you come in for a breast surgery consultation. During your visit, your surgeon reviews your medical and surgical history and conducts various diagnostic tests.

The general surgical practice works closely with your medical oncologist, radiation oncologist, and plastic surgeon to ensure you get the best possible care.

The team also provides breast surgery consultations for high-risk patients, including patients with a family history of breast cancer, patients with an early breast cancer diagnosis, and patients with a history of an abnormal breast biopsy.

For high-risk patients, the team makes treatment recommendations, provides prevention strategies, and offers long-term follow-up care.
